Frequently Asked Questions
What behaviors can you help with?
I can best help with behaviors such as tantrums, refusal to complete instructions, defiance, not listening, aggression towards others*, self-injury*, elopement/darting away from adults*, sibling conflicts, and throwing. I can also help teach skills like potty training, waiting, giving up items when they're asked for, taking turns, functional communication, and tolerating "no."
*It's important to note that if the asterisk-marked behaviors are determined to be severe and highly dangerous, I ethically must refer you to in-person services to more effectively address them to ensure maximum safety for your child. If you think you may fall into this category, book a free call with me and I can help determine the best fit for your family!
What is ABA?
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based teaching method that uses the principles of behavioral science to teach communication skills, adaptive living skills, social skills, and other positive skills with the goal of increasing independence and decreasing behaviors that cause pain, jeopardize safety, or prevent the learner from accessing their community. Effective therapy guided by the principles of ABA analyzes data to ensure desired and socially significant outcomes, adheres strictly to the field's code of ethics, utilizes current research to guide practice, relies on positive reinforcement over punishment whenever possible, and is highly individualized to the learner's specific needs.

What if the strategies you give me don't work right away, or don't work at all?
Behavior change takes time! Often what is needed when introducing new skills or behavior change is consistency, patience, and perseverance. Because every child is a unique individual with a unique learning and reinforcement history, sometimes it takes a few tries for a strategy to click. If it doesn't seem like it's working right away, give it some time and utilize that text and email support after your consultation! If time continues to pass and it still doesn't seem to be working, reach out to me and I can help.
How do you define compassionate care?
Compassionate care means that I take assent into account whenever I possibly can. It means that I encourage following your child's lead and letting them be themselves while still teaching important skills and replacement behaviors when they're needed. It means ensuring basic needs are always met, even in the midst of challenging behaviors. It also means following through on demands when it's appropriate, setting and upholding high expectations, and challenging kids to be the best versions of themselves to set them up for future success.
